Im Trubel des operativen Alltagsgeschäfts und der bevorstehenden Feiertage geraten unter Umständen die vielen kleinen, vor Ort aber ungemein wichtigen Details eines erfolgreichen Messeauftritts, in Vergessenheit. Deshalb bitten wir Sie, sich einen kurzen Moment Zeit zu nehmen und unsere alljährliche Checkliste mit dem aktuellen Stand Ihrer Vorbereitungen abzugleichen.

Vorab jedoch ein kleiner Vorgeschmack auf unsere bevorstehende Jubiläumsveranstaltung. Im Messe-Vorbericht von Dr. Ursula Kampmann erhalten Sie einen ersten Überblick zu den geplanten Highlights.

World Money Fair. Die Vierzigste!
Vom 28. bis 30. Januar 2011 in Berlin

40 Jahre World Money Fair, 30 Jahre Gastland, 20 Jahre Media Forum
130 Tische à 50 Franken, 87 Münzenhändler, mehr als 1.000 Besucher, das war die Bilanz der ersten Internationalen Münzenmesse in Basel. Nur 10 Jahre später war die Schweizer Veranstaltung bereits eine Institution. Regelmäßig trafen sich die Sammler mit ihren Händlern und Albert Beck kam auf die Idee, anlässlich des ersten Jubiläums eine neue Attraktion für seine Messegäste einzuführen: Die Präsentation eines Ehrengastlandes. Als Vertreterin Kanadas machte Royal Canadian Mint als erste teilnehmende internationale Münzstätte den Anfang. Und bald wurde klar mit der Kombination von Messe und Sonderpräsentationen war auch die europäische Medienlandschaft zu begeistern. Beck reagierte schnell und schenkte sich und der Europa-Münzenmesse Basel zum 20. Geburtstag ein zusätzliches neues Veranstaltungsformat: Das Media Forum. Seitdem stellen hier alljährlich bis zu 20 internationale Prägestätten ihre aktuellen Münzenprogramme vor – sehr zur Begeisterung von ambitionierten Sammlern und Fachjournalisten.

Immer noch Kernstück der World Money Fair: Die Münzenmesse

Die Jubiläumsveranstaltung
Inzwischen ist die World Money Fair mit rund 13.000 Besuchern die weltweit größte Münzenmesse. Mehr als 300 Aussteller, darunter etwa 50 staatliche Münzstätten kommen jedes Jahr, um ihr Angebot einer ständig wachsenden Schar an Interessierten zu offerieren. Der Umzug aus Basel nach Berlin im Jahr 2006 hat einen enormen Entwicklungsschub gebracht.
Auch dieses Jahr findet wieder das auch für Sammler zugängliche Media Forum statt, bei dem internationale Münzstätten ihre Münzenprogramme vorstellen. Wer aus erster Hand Informationen sucht, ist hier gerade richtig.
Nur für Fachleute ist dagegen das Technik Forum, das sich zu einer wichtigen Veranstaltung im Rahmen der World Money Fair entwickelt hat. Hier werden vor allem produktionstechnische Fragestellungen und Trends diskutiert.
Das Osnabrücker Auktionshaus Fritz Rudolf Künker hat auch im Rahmen der Jubiläumsveranstaltung eine spannende Auktion vorbereitet, die in diesem Jahr u.a. eine Sammlung von hervorragend erhaltenen, prachtvollen Brakteaten der Wetterau enthält. Daneben findet der Kenner im Katalog Raritäten aus Silber und Gold, nicht zu vergessen das große Angebot an russischen Münzen.
Die Gewinner des Coty Award (Coin of the Year Award) wurden gerade vom Organisator des Wettbewerbs, Krause Publications, bekannt gegeben. Die Übergabezeremonie findet selbstverständlich anlässlich der World Money Fair statt.
Die Publikumsmesse wird wie jedes Jahr noch ein bisschen bunter, noch ein bisschen internationaler, noch ein bisschen unterhaltsamer. Die Münzstätten wetteifern miteinander, wer die begehrtesten Specials zur World Money Fair mitbringt. Und der Münz-Passport, der gegen eine Schutzgebühr von 10 Euro Zugang zu 30 Kleinmünzen verschiedener Münzstätten bietet, ist bei Anfängern und Fortgeschrittenen unter den Sammlern immer höchst beliebt. Dieses Jahr müssen die Interessierten schnell sein. Es steht zu erwarten, dass der Münz-Passport bald ausverkauft sein wird, enthält er doch eine Kleinmünze des Vatikan mit dem Bildnis des Papstes. Der Vatikan beteiligt sich übrigens erstmalig am Projekt des Münz-Passports!

Gastland 2011: Die Mint of Poland, die polnische Münzstätte

Im Mittelpunkt des Programms steht dieses Jahr die Mint of Poland, die polnische Münzstätte. Sie wird nicht nur den zentralen Stand des Ehrengastes der World Money Fair beziehen, sondern auch mit zahlreichen Aktionen ihr Land und seine Münzen bekannt machen. Die Mint of Poland hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren den Ruf erworben, besonders innovativ zu sein. Überprüfen Sie selbst vor Ort, ob dies der Wahrheit entspricht.

In advance, we'd like to give you a little foretaste of our anniversary event. The preliminary trade fair report by Dr. Ursula Kampmann offers a first overview of the highlights.

World Money Fair. The fortieth edition!
From January 28 to 30, 2011 in Berlin

40 Years of World Money Fair, 30 Years of Guest of Honor, 20 Years of Media Forum
130 tables at 50 Swiss francs each, 87 coin dealers, over 1 000 visitors – that was the result of the first Basel International Coin Fair. Only 10 years later, the Swiss event had become an institution where coin collectors and their dealers regularly met. On the occasion of its first anniversary Albert Beck had the idea to introduce a new attraction for the visitors of the coin fair – presenting a guest of honor. The Royal Canadian Mint, representing Canada, was the first international mint to take on this part. It soon became clear that the combination of a trade fair and special presentations also got the media interested. Beck reacted quickly and, to please both himself and the Basel European Coin Fair, he organized a new event format for the 20th anniversary – the Media Forum. Each year since then, up to 20 international mints use the occasion to showcase their latest numismatic programs, creating enthusiasm among ambitious collectors, journalists and experts.

The Anniversary
Meanwhile the World Money Fair is the world's largest coin fair with an attendance of about 13,000. Over 300 exhibitors, among them around 50 national mints, come every year to present their offerings to a continually growing crowd of interested visitors. Moving the event from Basel to Berlin in 2006 brought a great leap in development.
The Media Forum, which is accessible for collectors, will take place again this year. Fourteen mints will deliver presentations in English about their numismatic programs. It is the perfect place for anyone looking for first-hand information.
Another event that has become an important part of the World Money Fair is the Technical Forum, which, however, is for experts only. At this conference technical questions and latest developments in coin production are discussed.
The auction house Künker Numismatics, based in Osnabrück, have again prepared an exciting auction. This time it includes a collection of magnificent bracteates from the German Wetterau region in excellent state of preservation. The connoisseur will find further rarities in silver and gold in the catalog, not forgetting the large choice of Russian coins.
The winners of the Coin of the Year Awards have just been announced by Krause Publications, their sponsor and organizer. As a matter of fact, the award ceremony will be held on the occasion of the largest numismatic event of the year – the World Money Fair.
Each year the trade fair gets a bit more colorful, a bit more international and a bit more entertaining. Mints are competing to bring the most coveted attractions to the World Money Fair. And the Coin Passport which, for 10 euro, offers access to 30 small coins from different mints is always immensely popular with both beginners and advanced collectors. Anyone interested in getting one should hurry up this year. The passport is expected to be sold out quickly, as it contains a small coin from the Vatican State depicting the Pope. Actually the Vatican participates in the Coin Passport for the first time!

The Polish mint will not only occupy the central booth at the World Money Fair, but also promote the country and its coins with various special events. In the past few years, the Mint of Poland has gained a reputation for being particularly innovative. Come and see for yourself if this is true.
