Allgemeine Gold- und Silberscheideanstalt AG
Blanks for Coins and Medals
Pforzheim, which is located in the south of Germany near Stuttgart, is often called the „Golden City“ – due to its tradition of industrial jewellery manufacturing. Here is the headquarter of Allgemeine Gold- und Silberscheideanstalt AG. Originally Allgemeine was founded as a refinery and joint stock company by local jewellery manufacturers in 1891, and has been in operation for more than a century.
Since then, Allgemeine has become a precious metal company that offers a wide variety of precious metal semi-finished products and precious metal services for its customers on a multiregional level. Today, Allgemeine offers the entire precious metal cycle, beginning with precious metal recycling, the production of semi-finished products and precious metal management. Allgemeine is part of the Belgian Umicore group of companies and is also represented by its own subsidiaries worldwide.
Meanwhile, Allgemeine has also made a name for itself as a producer of high-quality blanks for coins and medals. Traditionally, this business was integrated in the former Degussa corporation in Hanau, Germany (Degussa had been Allgemeine’s major share holder in the past), and was transferred entirely into the business scope and premises of Allgemeine in Pforzheim during the years 1993 – 1997. Here in Pforzheim, this product segment was developed continually, capacities were expanded and the manufacturing process is constantly being monitored for further improvement opportunities.
Today Allgemeine supplies European and international mints with high-quality blanks according to customer specification, available in all well-established gold and silver alloys or as finemetal blanks and discs. For the manufacturing of coin blanks at Allgemeine approx. 400 tonnes of finesilver are used annually, and the total amount of Allgemeine-blanks easily runs up to millions and millions of pieces each year. It is only by strict quality requirements that an output of this scale can be maintained steadily. In this process, Allgemeine’s laboratories play a decisive role, and they guarantee that the composition and structure of the alloys are constantly kept within narrowly defined tolerances.
Allgemeine also offers its assistance in all questions related to technology and application. This function is seen as one of Allgemeine’s core competences and is often used in order to help optimize the customer’s manufacturing processes.
In this context, Allgemeine has welcomed the opportunity of sponsoring this year’s Technical Forum at the World Money Fair 2011. The Technical Forum has become an invaluable information pool and an essential part of the World Money Fair programme. By exchanging views, opinions and information, both exhibitors and visitors use this platform as a widely noticed discussion forum. Beyond its range of products and services, Allgemeine wishes to contribute to this event. The company is a longstanding exhibitor of World Money Fair and can be contacted at booth D74.
